Sewer Backflow Prevention
HOW TO COMPLY WITH CITY RESOLUTION NO. 2015-12
REQUIRING SEWER BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE
The City of Nevada City adopted Resolution No. 2005-12 on March 14, 2005 that a backflow prevention device shall be installed on the property owner’s sewer lateral line from the City’s sewer main. A backflow device is required upon the transfer of any parcel of real property within the City limits prior to the close of escrow or transfer.
In addition, please note that the City contracts with the Nevada County Building Department for issuance of all building permits (e.g. construction, roofing, electrical, plumbing, etc). At the time of building permit application, the building department staff will ask if a backflow prevention device is installed at the property. If unknown, the Building Inspector will verify if a backflow device is installed on the property upon inspection of the work that was applied for at the Building Department. If the Inspector determines that a device is not installed, the following process needs to be completed prior to receiving a “Final” of a building permit:

Contact City Hall Planning Department at (530)-265-2496 ext. 130 to determine if a back flow prevention device permit is on file. If a permit is on file, the City will provide you with a copy of the permit to submit to the County Building Department. If a permit is not on file, please take the following steps:

Contact a plumber or contractor to install a backflow prevention device.

Once installed, please contact the Nevada City Public Works Superintendent at [email protected] and request an inspection – please give your name, address and contact phone number or fill out the online form. An inspection will be scheduled.

After inspection, the Public Works Superintendent will complete a backflow prevention device installation permit. You will need to submit a copy of this permit to the County Building Department as proof of installation of the backflow prevention device to receive a “Final” on the building permit that was issued. A copy will be retained on file with the City Planning Department.
