A Business License is required for:
- Anyone doing business of any kind in the City, including non-profit organizations, whether or not the business is in an office or store in the City.
- Anyone running a business out of a home located in the City. For home businesses, you will also need a Home Occupation Permit in addition to a Business License.
Before doing business in the city limits, the owner of the business has to apply for a Business License; i.e., anyone who does business in Nevada City has to have a Business License.
Business Licenses are issued on a fiscal year basis (July 1st – June 30th). The fees are listed on the license application. If you aren’t sure which category your business classifies as, contact City Hall for more information.
If there is a change in ownership or location of the business, you need to contact the City right away to update your records.
Business Licenses are not transferable.
If you are running a business from your home, you need to complete the Business License Application and a Home Occupancy Permit. You have to meet the criteria for a home business to qualify for a Home Occupancy Permit. This permit has a one time $50 fee.
You also have to complete a Business Emergency Form. This form will give the police information that will help them respond in case of an emergency.
There is a non-profit Downtown Business Association and a Business Improvement District (BID). At this time there are no additional assessment fees for these organizations, as they are working closey with the Chamber of Commerce. For more information call the Chamer at 530-265-2692.
Note that all signs and exterior changes (e.g., painting and construction work) to your business location are subject to City approval. Contact the Planning Department to determine what you will need to do to get the necessary approval.
