If you will be burning yard waste, you need to get a Burn Permit before you burn. Burn Permits are available free of charge at the following locations:
City Hall - 317 Broad St. (530-265-2496)
Monday – Friday; 8am-Noon & 1-5pm
OR
Fire Station 54 - 201 Providence Mine Rd. (530-265-2351)
Monday – Friday; 8am -5pm
These conditions apply to Burn Permits for private property:
• Burning is allowed only on burn days. Call 530-274-7928 for burn day information. Note that the State of California may determine a ban on burning and, no burning will be allowed during the ban - even if you possess a valid Burn Permit.
• Burning is limited to daylight hours, unless you get written permission in advance from the Nevada City Fire Department.
• Burn Permits are required all year.
• Dense smoke or offensive odors will not be allowed.
• Control burns cannot be left unattended.
• Burn piles must be less than four feet in diameter, with a minimum clearance of fifty feet between burn piles and any buildings or combustible materials.
• A garden hose connected to a reliable water source, or other approved fire extinguishing equipment, has to be readily available.
• Burn Permits have to be on the burn site at all times and must be made available on request by any Fire or Police Officer.
• You cannot start a fire on anyone else’s property without written permission from the owner or the owner’s agent.
• All burning must follow the applicable rules and regulations of the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District and the Uniform Fire Code.
