Burn Permit

If you will be burning yard waste, you need to get a Burn Permit before you burn. Burn Permits are available free of charge at the following locations:

City Hall - 317 Broad St. (530-265-2496)
Monday – Friday; 8am-Noon & 1-5pm
OR
Fire Station 54 - 201 Providence Mine Rd. (530-265-2351)
Monday – Friday; 8am -5pm

These conditions apply to Burn Permits for private property:

Burning is allowed only on burn days. Call 530-274-7928 for burn day information. Note that the State of California may determine a ban on burning and, no burning will be allowed during the ban  - even if you possess a valid Burn Permit.

Burning is limited to daylight hours, unless you get written permission in advance from the Nevada City Fire Department.

Burn Permits are required all year.

Dense smoke or offensive odors will not be allowed.

Control burns cannot be left unattended.

Burn piles must be less than four feet in diameter, with a minimum clearance of fifty feet between burn piles and any buildings or combustible materials.

A garden hose connected to a reliable water source, or other approved fire extinguishing equipment, has to be readily available.

Burn Permits have to be on the burn site at all times and must be made available on request by any Fire or Police Officer.

You cannot start a fire on anyone else’s property without written permission from the owner or the owner’s agent.

All burning must follow the applicable rules and regulations of the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District and the Uniform Fire Code.
